18 - Le Fonti
Via delle fonti, a Tavarnelle, è sempre stata un’incognita, quelle tre nicchie che racchiudono chissà quali segreti, il nome della via, “Le Fonti” appunto.
Ma forse una possibile ricostruzione adesso la possiamo fare.
Parlando con i dipendenti comunali di un tempo, gli stesi che hanno lavorato per anni fra le vie del paese, si parla di un acquedotto sotterraneo, in terracotta, che si sviluppa sotto le vie del paese, partendo dalla zona “Fontazzi”, (anche questo un nome ricorda l’acqua, ed un tempo questi nomignoli non erano mai dati per caso, e dove sicuramente c’erano acque sorgive,) per arrivare in via delle fonti, probabilmente dando acqua anche alla fonte posta in via Naldini.
Si trovano notizie di questa fonte anche sui documenti che parlano della Stazione di Posta di Tavarnelle, “La più bella di tutto il Gran Ducato di Toscana” e proprio fra queste notizie si scopre che i viandanti, gli stessi cittadini di Tavarnelle, i loro cavalli, pur stazionando nella “Covona”, questo il nome dell’Osteria e stazione di posta, era “più semplice” portare i cavalli ad abbeverarsi poco distante alla fonte o pozzo adibito proprio a questo.
Mi piace pensare ad una soluzione come questa, che portava l’acqua a tutti, un servizio importante che certamente era un motivo di orgoglio per il paese e per chi ospitava ogni giorno tante persone.

(Stazione di Posta di Tavarnelle)……… le camere da letto per i passeggeri insieme con quella del locandiere non sono più di cinque camere e queste sono state credute e si credono sufficientissime per una posta e per
una locanda delle più frequentate della Toscana. Il fienile che rimane sopra la stalla
dicesi di capacità di 80 mila libbre di fieno ma esso è così basso che può dubitarsene.
Per abbeverare i cavalli conviene andar fuori dell’osteria ad un pozzo pubblico che
non è vicinissimo.
LE FONTI
The three niches, “Le Fonti”, that give Via delle Fonti its name hold who knows what secrets, but perhaps now a reconstruction is possible.
Municipal employees of the past, those who worked in Tavarnelle for years, spoke of an underground aqueduct made of terracotta reaching out under the streets of the town. It is believed to have originated in an area called “Fontazzi”, a name reminiscent of a fountain or source of water, and terminated in Via delle Fonti. It’s important to remember that in the past place names were never given by chance. The aqueduct probably provided water to the fountain located in Via Naldini as well.
Information also exists in documents that speak of the post station of Tavarnelle, “The most beautiful of the entire Grand Duchy of Tuscany.” It is from these accounts that we discover that it was considered “easier” for travelers, the citizens of the town, and their horses to get water at the fountain or well for this specific purpose not far from “Covona”, as the inn and post station at Tavarnelle was known. We can imagine that it was a source of pride for the town and those who hosted so many people every day to have water for all.
In a document from 1780 comparing post stations along the Pistoia and Modena roads, it is written of the post station of Tavarnelle: “… the sleeping rooms for passengers and the innkeeper’s room total no more than five rooms: it is believed that they are sufficient for a tavern post that is one of the most popular in Tuscany. The hayloft is above the stable and it’s said it has a capacity of eighty thousand pounds of hay but the ceiling is so low that this is doubtful. To water the horses, it is best to go outside the tavern to a public well a short distance away.”
