23 - Piazza Domenico Cresti "Il Passignano"
E’ stata la piazza principale del paese di Tavarnelle per tantissimi anni, l’unica, ed il grande palazzo in fondo era la sede della Guardia del Granducato, divenuta poi sede dei Carabinieri, fino al trasferimento nella nuova sede in piazza Matteotti.
Nata come sede del mercato settimanale del giovedì, ufficialmente istituito nel 1822, e le due fiere annuali di bestiame che vi si svolsero per decenni.
La Piazza fu edificata sul finire del XVIII secolo ed ampliata in seguito con nuovi edifici tra il 1831 ed il 1837, per la nuova importanza assunta dal borgo e dalla Via Romana. La Piazza è intitolata a Domenico Cresti, detto il Passignano, pittore italiano del tardo manierismo nato a Tavarnelle Val di Pesa nel 1559.

“Sino verso al termine del Secolo XVIII la contrada di Tavarnelle si componeva di poche casupole. Oggi però mediante l’accrescimento degli abitanti e della loro industria è assai migliorata dall’antico squallore per le più decenti abitazioni, per le ben’ fornite officine, le quali ricevono movimentato commerciale dal mercato aperto fino dell’anno 1822 nei giorni di Giovedì. Avvertiamo di più il genio di una Società per la musica, e d’un’altra per le rappresentanze teatrali che si produce al pubblico nel Carnevale. “
This was the main square of the town of Tavarnelle for many years. Indeed, it was the only one and the large building at the end of it housed the Guard of the Grand Duchy and later the headquarters of the Carabinieri, until it moved to Piazza Matteotti.
Officially established in 1822, the square was conceived as the site of the weekly market on Thursdays and the two annual livestock fairs that were held in the town for decades.
Buildings around the square were developed at the end of the 18th century and the area was enlarged with new buildings between 1831 and 1837 in light of the new importance of the town and of Via Romana. The square is dedicated to Domenico Cresti, known as ‘il Passignano’, a painter of the late Mannerism period who was born in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in 1559.

“Until approximately the end of the 18th century, the Tavarnelle district was made up of a few small houses. Today, however, through growth of the population and their industry, the town is much improved compared to the ancient squalor. There is now decent housing and well appointed workshops, which are commercially active due to the Thursday market established in 1822. We note a brilliance on the part of a society for music as well as for theatrical representations that are presented to the public during Carnival.”
